Paul M. Neuberger, Founder & CEO
My story begins my sophomore year at Ripon College. Imagine my surprise that year when I suddenly realized that the books weren’t free, that my tuition would come due at some point and, on the rare occasion that I actually had a date that I would likely have to pay for the meal. Where were these funds going to come from when you are penniless and not currently employed?
I have always been extroverted and, my wife will now tell you, it seems in love with the sound of my own voice. With that being said, imagine my excitement when I heard of this on-campus program called The Phonathon. The College was looking for students to make phone calls to alumni, parents and friends in an effort to raise money for the scholarship fund.
I gave it a shot and, to be blunt, it was love at first sight! When you like to jaw jab as much as I do, you can be rather successful in a position like that. Following three years of intense money raising, I was approached by a member of the Advancement Office who asked me to consider staying on full-time after graduation. My intention was to go to medical school, so I respectfully demurred.
Persistence was a quality in full supply in this gentleman and he reminded me that, as an aspiring orthopedic surgeon, I would be in school for yet another 52 years and that I may be well-served to get one year of real world experience beforehand. I agreed and decided to pursue this opportunity with his office.
Within three months I believed I found my calling in life. I rose through the ranks quickly and within a few years made it to Vice President for Advancement at Marian University in Fond du Lac, WI. I now had my sights set on becoming a college president and was determined to do everything within my power to achieve that position within a few years.
Well, as typically happens, God had other plans. Following the fatal heart attack of my father-in-law, I was reminded of just how fragile life is and how, at any given point, it can be taken away from us. I decided then to re-dedicate my life to ensuring that everyone is protected from the “what ifs” in life and that nobody that I loved would be in a precarious financial position because they had not thought of this beforehand.
I became a financial advisor and was ready to succeed in this industry! I soon noticed, however, that there is a huge difference between cold calling when you are salaried and cold calling when your life depends upon it. I was always good at this skill, but how do I become great? How can I get in front of more people faster? How can I ensure that the quality of these potential clients goes up, as well?
I was not an overnight sensation, needless to say! I witnessed some spectacular failures, many of which I will take to my grave, so don’t bother asking for details. Call it stupidity or call it genius, but either way I had the tenacity to try new things. Some of those things worked decently and some worked incredibly well. Next thing I know, I am getting fewer and fewer “no” responses until they barely happened at all.
This started to gather the attention of local professionals. Bankers, realtors, and financial professionals, among others, started asking if I could show them what I was doing or if I would be kind enough to stop by their offices and work with their team. A few of them even said, “We’ll pay you if you help us.”
Seeing a business opportunity, I created The Cold Call Coach in April 2015 and, in an effort to meet the increasing demand for our services, went full-time in October 2015. Since then, I have been blessed to work with Fortune 500 companies, professional sports teams, clients in nearly one dozen states, and have spoken in front of thousands of people. But I also relish my time with solo entrepreneurs, stay-at-home moms who sell on the side, or the small real estate shop just looking to get in front of more potential clients.
Don’t believe that cold calling is dead! It is alive and well and is easily the most effective tool on the market when done correctly. Want to learn how to get in front of who you want, when you want, for whatever reason you want? Give us a call today and let’s get to work!
Thank you for visiting our website. We are humbled by your interest. We hope to hear from you and would be honored to work with you in some capacity.
